Safe Water Project

“Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” — W. H. Auden
Clean, accessible water is vital to life, health, poverty reduction, a healthy environment, as well as a sustainable economy. Yet, worldwide, more than two billion people do not have access to this basic resource.

According to the World Health Organization . . .

  • 785 million people lack even a basic drinking-water service, including 144 million people who are dependent on untreated surface water from lakes, ponds, rivers and streams.
  • Globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with feces.
  • Contaminated water can transmit diseases such diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio.
  • Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause 485,000 diarrhea deaths each year.

Up to 80% of illnesses in the developing world are linked to inadequate water and sanitation.  In 2017, 2 billion people worldwide did not have access to basic sanitation facilities such as toilets or latrines. 673 million people still practiced open defecation, i.e. in street gutters, behind bushes or into open bodies of water. Contaminated water and a lack of basic sanitation are undermining efforts to end extreme poverty and disease in the world’s poorest countries.

Developing countries, like Kenya, are most affected by water shortages, flooding and poor water quality. Drought in Kenya over the past several years has led to a water crisis in the Nairobi region.
With a population of 50 million, 41 percent of Kenyans still rely on unimproved water sources, such as ponds, shallow wells and rivers, while 71 percent of Kenyans use unimproved sanitation solutions. These challenges are especially evident in the rural areas and the urban slums. Only 9 out of 55 public water service providers in Kenya provide continuous water supply, leaving people to find their own ways of searching for appropriate solutions to these basic needs. – source – water.org
The responsibility for collecting water most often falls on women and children to walk miles each day to find surface water full of water-borne disease that is making them and their families sick.  Because of the hours spent collecting water every day and the illness resulting from contaminated water, many children are deprived of the opportunity to go to school.  The lack of clean water robs children, families, and entire communities of their futures.

However, the availability of safe and dependable water restores hope and unlocks potential to current and future generations.  Go Ministries is working to get free, safe drinking water to developing areas in Africa by drilling wells and installing safe water tanks.  We have been and will continue working with a local church in each community to ensure ALL members of the community will reap the benefits of every Safe Water Tank.  Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:37-38)  We believe that when people see the church as a source to provide clean water, they realize that God has seen their need, heard their cries for help, understand that He is their provider and will be more receptive to the One who provides “living water”!  Meeting the physical need is the first step to meeting the spiritual need and opens the door to share the Gospel.

In June 2018, GMI dedicated a water project at Kwangethe Primary School located in Juja constituency in Ruiru . The school is part of the Thika district in the Central province of Kenya. Kwangethe is a public school with over 900 students enrolled.  This school has bathroom facilities on the grounds, but had been without water for over two years, along with most of the village.  The water tank will provide water not only to the school, but also to the surrounding community free of charge.

In order to make every Safe Water Project successful, the funding must be raised in full before breaking ground. Each project requires the following:
  • Site Assessment
  • Well Drilling
  • High Pressure Submersible Pump
  • 10,000 Liter Tank
The total for each Safe Water Project is a projected minimum of $15,000. All funds raised will go directly to toward the completion of the project. In the event a project costs less than anticipated, savings will be applied to a project with cost overruns or to a new water tank installation.

Your contribution helps to provide access to clean water to the world’s most vulnerable. Every gift helps to restore hope one life, one family and ultimately one community at a time.
